Everything that connects to the internet is assigned an IP address and packets are attached to the IP address, so they arrive where they need to go. TCP/IP was born in 1969 when the Advanced Research Projects Agency or ARPA for short, funded a project looking to create a long-distance network. They needed a network that could withstand a nuclear attack, for all types of computers to be able to communicate easily, and a way to connect systems over long distances. TCP/IP debuted in the 1970s because early networking researchers realized data had to move from different networks and to multiple locations. Work actually began in 1973 on TCP/IP and Internet Protocol version 4 or IPv4 was rolled out in 1978.
