IYT2 Task One.docx IYT2, Introduction to Curriculum Theory, Task 1 Western Governors University Introduction Within the realm of education, there are four main ideologies, or theories, that educators subscribe to and/or argue against: social reconstruction, social efficiency, scholar academic, and learner-centered. Each of the four possess key elements that distinguish them from one another. In this paper, each of these ideologies will be discussed and evaluated as to their appropriateness to an instructional setting. The instructional setting being analyzed in this paper is an elementary Life Skills classroom in a Title I public school. The class has a total of eight students, four of which are males and four females. All students come from low-income families that qualify for free and reduced lunches. There are five first graders, one second grader, one third grader, and one fourth grader in the classroom. Of the eight students, three have been diagnosed with low-functioning forms of autism. All three aforementioned students are non-verbal, meaning that they cannot communicate in a typical fashion and require the use of picture support and core boards to relay their wants, needs, and choices. One student has been diagnosed with Down syndrome and is also non-verbal. The remaining four students have a diagnosis of an intellectual disability and a speech impediment for which they receive weekly speech therapy.
