IYT2 task 2.docx Task 2 IYT2 In my current instructional setting, I am working in a Title 1 low-income school. There is an average of 60% of students on free and reduced lunch, and a lot of movement of migrant families. Our district is a minority majority with over 70% Hispanic and most coming to school speaking little to no English. Currently in my classroom of 21 first graders, 9 are English Language Learners and vary in proficiency of English. 2 are newcomers, 4 are almost proficient and close to exiting their language program, and the rest are somewhere in the middle. I also have 2 students with learning disability IEPs; one in reading, one in all content areas. I also have behavioral challenges that come as a result of different things, whether that be childhood trauma, academic challenges, or other ACEs or cultural differences. I also have several students who are gifted academically. I think all of these varying degrees of exceptional needs of students can contribute to struggles to provide for them all academically. Many of these challenges can be related to under-performance of students, including English Language Learners who are struggling to grasp academic English. Challenges around this can also be things like attendance, behavior that is not school-appropriate, and meeting expectations of administration, district, and state standards. There are also challenges around a home-school connection and having a working relationship between families and staff members. My philosophy
