Nursing Theory
Jean Watson developed the Philosophy and Science of Caring Theory. This theory addresses how nurses express care to their patients. At the core of this theory is the holistic approach to health care. Caring can promotes better health and simple medical care. Caring can be practiced and demonstrated by all nurses. This act of caring can promotes growth, and accepts individuals for who they are and can become (“Nurse-Theory”, n.d.). This theory has four major concepts, human being, health, environment/society, and nursing. Watson’s 10 carative factors are: forming humanistic-altruistic value systems, instilling faith-hope, cultivating a sensitivity to self and others, developing a helping-trust relationship, promoting an expression of feelings, using problem-solving for decision-making, promoting teaching-learning, promoting a supportive environment, assisting with gratification of human needs, and allowing for existential-phenomenological forces (“Nurse-Theory”, n.d.).
Excellent Nursing Practice
Standard nursing process which are required to be used by all nurses includes: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation, also known as ADPIE. Watsons theory follows this standard nursing process very closely. She implements assessment as the first tool. This tool identifies issues, and formulate a hypothesis. Next, creating a plan to solve the issues keeping in mind the patient as a whole. Third is the intervention which utilizes the plan and data. Lastly, the nurse may conduct an evaluation. This is the examination of the data, results of the intervention, as well as the interpretation of the results. Together these findings may lead to an additional hypothesis (“Nurse-Theory”, n.d.). By using this theory a trusting nurse patient relationship can be better fostered allowing nurses to an open line of communication and implementation of interventions to heal, which is based on trust and care of the patient.
