Professional Roles and Values C304 Task 1    Professional Roles and Values C304 Task 1  A.Nursing theory that has influenced my nursing practice  The theory that has resonated with me is the self-care deficit model by Dorothea Orem. I work as a telephonic nurse advocate for an insurance company. Many of the patients that are calling in need help in order to receive needed treatment. As a nurse advocate I am responsible to assess the patients needs. These patients need help with many things such as: financial assistance, denied medication or treatment, navigating and understand insurance benefits, transportation, prior authorization just to name a few. If the patient has many barriers to their care, part of my responsibility is to make sure that we get the patient assigned to a nurse case manager that will follow up with the member to continue to provide guidance and assistance as needed. Not only that, but it is important to also assess the patients mental status by doing a depression screening when it is called for. There are counselors and therapist that are available to help as well that we can put them in touch with depending on the outcome from the depression screening.
