IT104_Unit_9_Assignment.docx Unit 9 Assignment Purdue University Global Unit 9 Assignment For most businesses and organizations malware has become an ever-present threat. Because most businesses have an online presence and use email, a careless click or unwitting access of a compromised website can lead to a computer or server infected with malware. This can have serious consequences for an organization including loss of sensitive or private information and the potential loss of finances. According to a report published on Whitehouse.gov by The Council of Economic Advisors, the collective financial loss to the economy by malware infections was between $57 billion to $109 billion in 2016 (The Council of Economic Advisors, 2018). Therefore, the cybersecurity professional needs to be able to identify a potential malware infection and know the steps to take to remove it. First, it is important to know the signs of a potential malware infection. According to the Federal Trade Commission, such signs can include, slow performance, repeated crashes, frequent popups or ads in inappropriate places, inability to shut down, and unexpected changes to browsers or other programs (Federal Trade Commission, 2019). Any single instance is cause for suspicion. Multiple signs require immediate action. If an infection is suspected, then cease all activity and run a scan on the system or server using anti-malware software. If the software detects something, then it should be removed. If nothing is detected
