The natural water source for the city, Flint River, flows through the middle of the town, but has been the unofficial waste dump site for both treated and untreated from local industries. It has also been subjected to raw sewages from the city™s waste treatment plant. Fint is the home of 100,000 people, with a majority of African-Americans. Their issues with contaminated water started when the city™s piping treated water was changed for a cheaper option, which includes, pumping water from the Flint river until the new water pipeline was built. The river water was highly corrosive, the Flint officials failed to treat the water, and lead began to contaminate the water (Flint Water Crisis: Everything You Need to Know, 2020). Through this essay, I will be addressing what exactly was affecting Flint™s water, the toxic effects, their response, both initially and after it hit headlines, and further on about how humans can do better to help the environment. Cause of the Contamination After the citizens began using the water that was supplied from the Flint river, they complained that their tap water looked, smelled, and tasted nasty. After constant fighting, the city officials continued to state that the water was safe and drinkable.
