While the effects of this health crisis are clearly visible, the causes of it are less obvious and deserve to be brought to light. The primary causes of the current obesity crisis in the United States are a general confusion about what constitutes a proper diet, a higher availability and quantity of food than at any time in history, and significant negative changes in the amount exercise and movement in the daily life of most Americans. The topic of what constitutes a proper and healthy diet has perhaps never been more confusing than it is today - for evidence, walk into any bookstore and look at the health and diet section. The shelves are filled with sometimes very complicated and sometimes very simple instructions for diets. It is also not difficult to find seemingly contradictory diet advice, both of which are supposedly backed by science and a mountain of evidence and research, so the proponents of each diet claim. What further complicates the matter and confuses the consumer is the fact that many diets and much nutrition advice resurfaces regularly under different brand names and with new spokespeople.
