Schools must have an equal number of male and female sports in the high school. The aim of this paper is to discuss the implications of equal protection for K-12 students within as it applies to the classification in sports programs based on gender by reviewing the background, legal issues, and requirements of equal protection of this classification.  Factual Background  Title IX was introduced in 1972 and is a federal law that protects students, athletes, and faculty in educational programs and activities from discrimination that is based on sex or gender such as sexual misconduct, sexual violence, or gender-based discrimination.
