(Nightingale, 2009). The role and focus of nursing have grown greatly since Nightingale penned her understanding of nursing. Contemporary nursing involves formal education with complex substantive content reflecting a variety of disciplines that have evolved greatly since Nightingales philosophy. Contemporary nursing marries formal education with the long history and essence of nursing that has been holistic, humanistic, relational, and psychological with concepts of spirituality, dignity and empathy.
