C 121 Task 2 The Early Republic and American Civil War  C 121 Task 2 The Early Republic and American Civil War  A.Explain (suggested length of 1€“2 paragraphs) the reasons for the rise of partisan politics in the Early Republic (i.e., major conflicts and concerns, development of the First Party System).  In 1792 General George Washington was elected the President of the United States by a unanimous vote and this would be the last time a president would be elected unanimously. Although the founding fathers had created a new nation, people still have opinions and different points of view. With the new nation people generally fell into one of two categories, Federalists or Antifederalists. In truth both the Federalists and the Antifederalists wanted what was best for the country and its people, they simply disagreed on how to do so.  The Federalists believed the Constitution was drafted with the separation of powers so the nation would not fall to tyranny.  The Federalists saw the Articles of Confederation as giving too much authority to the states and failed to give the federal government the authority it needed. Under the Articles of Confederation, the federal government did have the authority to tax the states and was quickly falling apart. The Federalist believed those who did not agree with them were simply wrong and called them Antifederalist to present those who opposed in a negative light.
