JNT2_needs_analysis_swank.docx JNT 2- Task 1: Needs Analysis Summary of Instructional Problem I teach a section of a summer school expository reading and writing course for 11th-grade students to prepare them for their senior writing class. I have found that many students struggle to compose a clearly defined thesis statement and, therefore, their essay is disorganized or unclear because of this foundational issue. Students need to re-learn what a thesis statement is, the components of a thesis, and how it relates to the organization of the writing assignment before attempting to write a cohesive essay. Students will benefit from hands-on activities that will allow them to deconstruct theses, reconstruct premade theses, and then construct their own thesis statement. Current Conditions and Desired Conditions Current Conditions Students are in the high schools summer bridge program because they scored below basic or far below basic on the writing section of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). These students are struggling with identifying a thesis statement and also with editing a thesis statement for clarity. Students are capable of reading complex texts, analyzing the information, and identifying support for their argument; however, they need extra support to write a thesis that answers the prompt and clearly expresses their argument. These students have been placed in the bridge program to help them start their senior year at-level for writing. Desired Conditio
