JNT2 Needs Analysis.docx Task Analysis Assessment Code: JNT2 Task Analysis Discussion of Instructional Problem The VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) has determined that all 4th graders will successfully edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraphing by using subject-verb agreement. (Virginia Department of Education, 2019). Following mini-lessons, guided instruction and then independent practice several students did not demonstrate competency with this standard. I believe lack of time to process and gain valuable and effective usage of this mechanic is what contributed to low scores. In addition to that I believe there is a correlation to reading levels. I have also concluded that the activities did not support substantial application for real world usage. This skill is necessary as students are required at this grade level and higher grades to compose for a variety of purposes. Contributing Factors to the Instructional Problem After a collaborative learning team meeting an analysis of classroom data determined that several students across the grade level failed this standard due to a lack of understanding in regards to basic grammar skills. There was also the discussion that prior to this students were not exposed to writing for two years. In depth discussions determined that students did not have a basic foundational comprehension of nouns and other parts of speech. Therefore identifying and editing incorrect subject
