Ccommunication in a group or with an individual has both similarities and differences. Common factors such as nonverbal communication (body language), clarity of message, and confirmation that the message was correctly understood are still prevalent in group communication; however, there are additional factors that must be considered. In group communications there are more than one receiver the message has to be accurately relayed to.
Just as with individual communication, group communication can be formal or informal.
When an organization's leaders establish a formal group, the purpose is to achieve company goals and objectives. Formal groups are established through a notation in an organization chart or by a management directive. An informal group, or a friendship group, emerges for the purposes of socialization and friendship. Such groups form without the endorsement of organizational leaders and do not have a designated structure (Baack, 2012. Ch.9.1).
