Journal_8_1.docx Journal 8-1: Family Systems Southern New Hampshire University Family Systems Parenting Style My parents can probably be considered demanding/control style parents. I remember, growing up, that my mom was really the one who œlaid down the law in our household. I never felt like I could say what was on my mind or express my feelings. I would classify my mom™s parenting as authoritarian parenting. She was strict, especially when it came to me because I am her only daughter. I remember thinking, œI wish I was a boy, because they don™t have to do the things that I have to do.. When I was old enough, mom showed and then made me fold laundry, clean the bathrooms from top to bottom, iron my dad™s military uniform, dust, and vacuum. Any household chore, I had to do because that is what œgirls do. My dad™s parenting style growing up was more permissive. He was not as strict as my mom, but also didn™t monitor what I did very closely. He would help me with my homework until he couldn™t understand it. He was more involved with my youngest brother, who was athletic, so they would play catch with the football and baseball outside. The one thing I remember my Dad doing for me is buying me books. I loved to read when I was young, and he would come home with two to three new/used books for me often. Social Class & Cultural Variations My family and I were not poor.
