Cornell Law School defines the term “separation of powers†as a model that divides the government into separate branches, each of which has separate and independent powers. By having multiple branches of government, this system helps to ensure that no one branch is more powerful than another. The legislative branch consists of the Congress and Senate House. In Article 1 of the US Constitution describes that the legislative branch is responsible for creating laws. The Constitution grants Congress the authority to carry out many tasks, such as, enacting legislation and declaring war, the right to confirm or reject many Presidential appointments as they see fit, and substantiate investigative powers. In Article 2, this established the power of the executive branch.
