unit2_assignment.docx IT3315 Unit 2 Assignment 1 A printer is a piece of technology that virtually everyone is familiar with, and in general, they function by converting digital information into a physical copy (Hall, 2018). However, not all printers are the same and vary greatly within their purposes, functionalities, and hardware. Laser Printers Laser printers are capable of high-volume printing, and are known for their speed. Many of them have a duplexing assembly, which allows them to print on the front and back of a single piece of a paper. While their initial cost is higher than that of an inkjet printer, the overall cost of laser printers is much more economical than inkjet printer because they can print more papers at a cheaper price as toner is relative cheap compared to the ink used in inkjet printers (Laser Printer: Advantages and Disadvantages, 2019). Laser printers require interface between mechanical, electrical, and optical technologies (Andrews, 2016, pp. 911 - 912). The process that a laser printer uses to print begins by receiving a page that is encoded in a language that it can understand and then the printers firmware processes the incoming data to produce a bitmap. The bitmap is then stored in the printers memory. It is important to note that while monochrome images only require one bitmap, color images require a bitmap for each of the primary colors of pigment, which are cyan, magenta, yellow and black, or CMYK (Andrews, 2016, pp. 913).
