This story reports that the Honolulu Police Department or HPD, has spent $150,000 in CARES Act funds on a robotic dog. Many are upset with how the police department has chosen to spend this money as a robotic dog seems to have no use to citizens on the island. I believe this to be an ethical issue as the action of the HPD has caused conflict with the publics morals. Many are angered at the way the police department spent the money, believing that it was frivolous and wont help with the homelessness or drug problems we see here on the island. Utilitarianism asks that one examines the potential outcomes of an action as it relates to the happiness of the majority (MacKinnin & Fiala, 2018 pg 5-7a). From the utilitarian viewpoint, one would view this issue as unethical. The decision to purchase this robot did not take into consideration the citizens of the island. Many feel that the money couldve been put to better use. The act is under criticism, thus the people affected are gaining no pleasure from the act. Kants theory shares that an act carried out with the right intention has moral worth (MacKinnin & Fiala, 2018 pg. 6-2a). If we look at the issue from the Kant theory perspective then the police department acted ethically.
