C351_Paper_.docx C351 Task 1 Western Governors University Models of Health and Healing The two models of health and healing I will compare will be the physical body and body-mind-spirit. The physical body model of health and healing was observed and used by the Western world, during Era I started around the 1860s and lasting for almost 100 years. œNoted physician Larry Dossey has identified three eras that provide a framework for the medicine operational in the Western world today (Koerner, 2011). Era I from 1860 to 1950, Era II 1950 to 1990, and Era II 1990 to present day. The physical body model was based on science and is mechanical, the focus was only on the physical workings of the body. During this era, it was believed that health and illness were only physical that the mind and spirit were irrelevant. The physical body model is driven by science how physical functions of the body worked; what could be seen, touched, and proven. Treatments and therapies were medicines and surgery which often addressed relieving symptoms for a cure and were considered efficient enough to heal a person. Era I was paternalistic the patient did what the doctor stated. The conscious mind and the chemical anatomical brain were considered separate. The conscious mind was not considered as an interlacing feature to healing until Era III, which began in the 1990s. Era III is known as the body/mind/spirit or bio/psycho/social model this has been widely used in Eastern Medicine for two thousand yea
