The two groups I will focus on are children whom are not native English speakers and often learning English in school for the first time, this group commonly being called English Language Learners (ELL). ELL students are often in their own classrooms but at some schools they are integrated into the common classroom for a period of time each day. Other schools do not have ELL programs in place and the student is always in the common class. The second group I will focus on is gifted children. Gifted children are children whom are, “children who give evidence of high-performance capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, leadership capacity, or specific academic fields, and require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school to fully develop†(Title IX - General Provisions. (2005, December 19)). There are specialized classes called advanced placement or AP classes. There are also specialized schools that gifted children can attend in order to better suit their educational needs. According to the national center for education statistics, about 9% of the student population is ELL, with that number rising closer to 14% in bigger cities (Gonzalez, J. (2014, December 11)).
