One reason noted has been due to a lack of preparation in the secondary school system. Another possibility is that the colleges themselves are ill prepared to deal with these pubescent adults who came from the secondary school system unprepared. Programs designed to uplift the graduation rate is being introduced in the political system and allows “pilot programs aimed at lifting the number of college graduates.†(Leonhardt, 2009). The focus is on enrollment for colleges right now and the article by Leonhardt states that if colleges were held accountable then the low-end colleges would change their policy into one of graduation rate success instead of one with the most enrollment status. Unpreparedness from the lower school systems, ill prepared colleges for pubescent adults, and the focus on high enrollment rates all play a part in the low graduation rate in the United States today. Money is a chief reason that students decide where to attend college. Low income students will find a college that is close to home, low cost to enroll and maintain their education curriculum.
