Nursing-quality indicators reflect three different aspects of nursing care: structure, process and outcomes, according to the American Sentinel University (2011). Structural indicators are the nursing staff, their education, certifications and skill levels. Process indicators measure the patient assessments, nursing interventions and job satisfaction. Outcome indicators are the patient outcomes as result of the quantity or quality of the nursing care provided. Some examples of outcome indicators are falls, pressure ulcers, cardiac failure and hospital readmission rates. In the Scenario of Mr. J, it is obvious that during his hospitalization, the staff in this rural hospital did not properly use nursing quality indicators for his patient care. There are multiple areas of concern about the care Mr. J received. First, Mr. J is diagnosed with a mild case of dementia, but was alert, cooperative and recognized his daughter. I question if there could have been a lesser restrictive fall prevention for his stay. Did he meet the criteria for the use of restraints?
