Examining social media and the effects that it has on an individual and the way they may think, and this is extremely important since social media is very prevalent. Social media can have a major effect on an individual™s motives and the way they present themselves. This can end up having a negative or a positive effect on a person. Motives Many people rely on the feedback from others in order to help them form their identity and to see what others are thinking of them is the same as what they are thinking of themselves which is their self-esteem. Self enhancement and self-verification tend to have either a positive or a negative influence on a person self-esteem (Gilovich, Keltner, Chen, & Nisbett, 2006). An individual who sees themselves as having a high self-esteem regards themselves as a balanced person who believes they are knowledgeable of their abilities, but they do not see their own defects. An individual with low self-esteem will regard their ideas of little or no value. They are more focused on their weakness and the things that they cannot do right instead of giving themselves credit for the things that they are good at they also believe that others are superior to them.
