Hobbs is a case that took place in 2015, the petitioner was inmate Gregory Houston Holt, also known as Abdul Maalik Muhammad, and the respondent was Ray Hobbs, Director of the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Holt was claiming that his first amendment rights were being violated by not being permitted to grow a beard in accordance with his religious faith that also is not supposed to be trimmed. Holt tried to compromise with prison officials and asked instead to grow a half inch beard that he would trim and maintain. His request was denied and that is when he initiated the case. Ultimately the Judge presiding over the case dismissed Holts petition after department witnesses testified that his beard raised security issues because his beard could be used to conceal contraband and could be shaved to change his appearance. The Judge presiding over the case stated that Holt was allowed to adequately practice his religion in other ways (Holt v. Hobbs, n.d).   Farmer v. Brennan is a case that took place in 1994, the petitioner was inmate Dee Farmer, and the respondents were warden Edward Brennan and federal prison officials.
