In this image, a lot of non-verbal behavior is apparent. Non-verbal communication can be de- scribed as “ all the messages other than words that are used in communication. In oral communi- cation, these symbolic messages are transferred by means of intonation, tone of voice, vocally produced noises, body posture, body gestures, facial expressions or pauses.†(Besson et al 1970.) The man standing appears to be in a position of power. He is authoritative and slightly aggres- sive by standing, in contrast to the others in the image who are sitting. He is literally looking down upon them, and talking down to them. This does not come across as though he is speaking to an equal. His facial expressions look stern and serious. He looks unpleased. It appear as though he is unhappy with the other people in this photo. When it comes to the female in the photo, she looks displeased; perhaps she is annoyed or insulted. What type of nonverbal communication codes are being used to deliver the message(s)? One of the nonverbal forms of communication displayed is the use of kinesics. The man stand- ing is using his posture and outstretched arm to convey his message. These types of body move- ments can complement, repeat, regulate or even replace the verbal message given.
