WK1EDUC 6171 Theories and Frameworks extension .docx EDUC 6171 The Theories We Studied Walden University EDUC 6171 Theories and Frameworks for Adult Learning Synthesis As I look over the theories we learned about this week, I find that I agree with parts of most of them, but I do not relate to other parts. The Behaviorist relates to change in behavior through stimuli in the external environment (Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, 2007). Growing up I learned things like do not touch a hot stove or I would get burned. It only took a couple of times to teach me to not touch. But as an adult learner, I find that I still learn some things through behaviorism. Accountability and performance are two things that are results of behavior. If I try hard and put work into my job, my accountability goes up and so does my performance. But if I do not do what is told to me, my outcome is not as good. The Humanist theory was not really something I was taught but learned on my own. My father had to travel and was gone for long periods of time and my mother had to work to help support us. I learned very early to be autonomous and mature (Merriam et al., 2007). Because of my family need, I was self-directed in learning in that I had to cook dinner for the family and clean and straighten up the house. I learned to finish my schoolwork and then my homework so when I got home I would be free to do what my family needed me to do. As a result, as an adult I would finish my assignment at work and then look to see
