Public Policy Issue The safe nurse staffing policy is a policy that needs to be implemented to address the healthcare organizational problem of inappropriate staffing levels. The goal of this policy is to ensure that an adequate number of nurses are staffed to meet the healthcare needs of patients. Registered nurses influence the quality of patient care as well as the safety of the patients. As our population ages with multiple comorbidities, health care technology advances at a rapid pace, and declining length of hospital stay for critically ill and injured patients continues to rise increasing the demand for skilled and competent registered nurses to care for high acuity patients in hospitals. However, low nurse staffing levels threaten patient care and compromise the delivery of care. For example, unsafe nurse staffing leads to significant medical errors, nurse and patient injuries, poor patient outcomes, and staff burnout (Dall'Ora et al., 2015; Driscoll et al., 2018). Safe nurse staffing must be a priority for nursing leadership as well as legislative bodies. Hospitals must be transparent and held accountable for ensuring safe nurse staffing plans so that nurses can deliver high quality care to their patients. Past research studies have shown that establishing safe nurse staffing plans enhances the health outcome of patients and reduces the rate of adverse event
