On a larger scale, a person or group of people might get in an automobile accident, a plane crash, or a boat sinking. Finally, a terrorist attack, earthquake, or hurricane may occur, and communities may feel helpless during such catastrophes.  Sometimes just a small cut or a fall may require a trip to the emergency room to get proper care. According to Smith, Schmalleger, & Siegel, (2017), œEmergency is defined as an extraordinary situation in which people are unable to meet their basic survival needs, or there are serious and immediate threats to human life and well-being (p. 239). Some examples of occurrences that are considered an emergency include workplace hazards (i.e. chemicals spills), car/boat accidents, faulty/dangerous equipment, power failures, natural disasters (i.e. cyclones, floods, severe storms, fire, environment hazards (i.e. snake and spider bite, falling branches, drowning, fire injuries, violence, bomb threats, medical conditions, suicide, an getting lost (Emergency Situations, n.d.). Depending on the type of emergency or occurrence believed to be an emergency situation, generally a bystander would call 911 and the agent that answers would deploy first responders.
