Within the Kindergarten classroom phonics is one of the top areas of content taught in Kindergarten. When teaching phonics, it is often taught whole group to the entire class without a lot of differentiation. In each class there is a variety of students that are at different levels in their understanding of phonics. The implementation of small group phonics instruction in a kindergarten classroom could improve student mastery. Expected Outcomes There are two action goals that are targeted for the action study. Through the implementation of this study it is expected that the students be better prepared for first grade as well as have higher reading scores. The first goal for this study is to increase the mastery of phonics skills to help increase their fluency and decoding skills while reading. The researcher will use the phonics assessment in order to evaluate where each student stands with their phonics skills. The second goal that has been set for this study is to increase the student™s opportunities for engagement and building confidence in reading. The researcher will implement the student survey to evaluate the confidence of each student as well as using it to observe how the students like to learn best. The phonics assessment and student survey will be given again at the end of the 12 weeks to use as
