Management Paper - Syria Name Institution Page Break Management Paper Introduction The Syrian Arab Republic, also known as Syria, is a nation located in the Western region of the Asian continent; sandwiched by Lebanon, Mediterranean Sea, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, and Israel. The country covers approximately 71,500 Sq. Miles that are distributed over plains, desert, and mountainous geography. Moreover, the state is characterized by an extreme cultural and religious diversity. Out of the extensive diversity in the country, it is worth noting that the country has been thriving in a deadly civil war since 2011; a feat that began as a peaceful resistance against the then president Bashar al-Assad, and has persisted to date, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and adversely affecting the country’s economic progress (BBC News, 2017). The adverse effects of the war on the country's economic progress have been evidenced in the over 5 million Syrians who have fled the country to neighboring nations while over 6.3 million are internally displaced. Moreover, over 85% of the country's citizens thrive in apt poverty, leaving the entire nation at the mercy of humanitarian organizations and other foreign nations (BBC News, 2017). Personally, I have not been to Syria, but despite the war state, I do not have any personal interests in the nation given the fact that the Asian nation has extensively destroyed by the Syrian Civil War; despite the previous ranking as a middle-income nation with vast resources and investment opportunities in various sectors, including oil, agriculture, and tourism (The World Bank, 2017). My selection for the country was fueled by the desire to highlight the adverse effects of war and conflict to any nation since the war in Syria has destroyed the nation’s economic, social, and political structures and the impacts could be felt for decades to come (Holodny, 2016).
