Select an ethnic minority group that is represented in the United States (American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander). Using health information available from Healthy People, the CDC, and other relevant government websites, analyze the health status for this group.

In a paper of 1,000-1,250 words, compare and contrast the health status of your selected minority group to the national average. Include the following:

  1. Describe the ethnic minority group selected. Describe the current health status of this group. How do race and ethnicity influence health for this group?

  1. What are the health disparities that exist for this group? What are the nutritional challenges for this group?

  1. Discuss the barriers to health for this group resulting from culture, socioeconomics, education, and sociopolitical factors.

  1. What health promotion activities are often practiced by this group?

  1. Describe at least one approach using the three levels of health promotion prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) that is likely to be the most effective in a care plan given the unique needs of the minority group you have selected. Provide an explanation of why it might be the most effective choice.

  1. What cultural beliefs or practices must be considered when creating a care plan? What cultural theory or model would be best to support culturally competent health promotion for this population? Why?

Cite at least three peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to complete this assignment. Sources should be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and public health content.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

1 Family Health Name Institution Course Instructor Date 2 Family Health Ethnic Minority Group Selection and the Effect of Race and Ethnicity on their Health The elected minority ethnic group for the assignment is Black/African Americans who have been highlighted through different studies as significantly disadvantaged in the U.S in terms of healthcare service provision over the years. Health inequities and disparities have been a major concern in the United States due to the multiple interdependent factors responsible for their existence. Ethnicity has been highlighted as a primary predictor of the prevalent health disparities in the U.S; implying that certain ethnicities are not able to achieve optimal health (Weinstein et al., 2017). Health disparities have been described as the variations that are evident among certain ethnic groups domiciled in the U.S about the achievement of complete and measurable health outcomes in terms of incidence, prevalence, death rates, disease burden, and other undesirable health conditions. African Americans can be described as those American citizens of black African descent; a fact primarily explained by their dark skin pigmentation. According to Carratala and Maxwell (2020), African Americans are described as any persons with partial or complete ancestry from any African Black racial group. Over the years, research has established that in terms of physical health, Black Americans perform worse than citizens from other ethnic backgrounds despite living in the same country (Lewis and Dyke, 2018). The link between poor physical health among the Black American population in the country is significantly associated with ethnic or racial discrimination and lacks any complete explanation based on their socioeconomic statuses, health behaviors, or access to care (Lewis and Dyke, 2018). According to Carratala and Maxwell (2020), the U.S has been identified as a home to persistence and starkness of racial discrimination in the area of health coverage. The phenomenon is also evident in chronic health conditions, mortality, and mental health. According to CDC (2017), the health status of African Americans remains worse than 3 their white counterparts. For instance, despite the significant decline in the death rates among African Americans (by approximately 25%) in the last decade, young members of the minority groups are currently managing or succumbing to health disorders common among the elderly white Americans (CDC, 2017). The deteriorating health statuses of African Ame...
