Assignment #3 – XLM C
The primary goal of this assignment is to reinforce the concepts from XLM C and help you build a little understanding of some database design techniques for working with data. Most business professionals in today’s high-tech world are knowledge workers. They rely on data and information to perform their daily tasks and be successful. End-user databases using desktop software, like Microsoft® Access and FileMaker Pro® (a derivative of Apple® desktop database software), are sometimes created by non-IT business professionals. The first requirement for working with a database is to understand the data that you are trying to organize – the actual database will come later.
For this assignment, consider a youth activity program like soccer, softball, or volleyball. Teams are made up of one or more coaches and multiple players or participants. Coaches can coach only one team and players can be assigned to only one team. To simplify this assignment we will ignore the game aspect of the league like officials and scheduling contests using available fields or facilities. Focus on only the teams and types of people that are part of the teams. Using the techniques from XLM C, think through the pieces of data and their relationships and attributes that would be needed to organize the league as a collection of teams. Document your analysis and understanding of this data by creating an initial data dictionary and entity-relationship diagram for the league using the guidance below. Download and view the sample reports (rosters) from the Moodle assignment but the format and actual data is ignored at this time – they are just samples to help you visualize the components of the league. None of the actual ID numbers, names, addresses, phones, etc. should appear in your assignment but all the info in the reports has to come from attributes of one or more pieces of the data collection.
Prepare and submit a PowerPoint presentation with the following items:
• A title slide that identifies you as the author along with the course and assignment info
• A slide containing a list of assumptions (like the bullet list at top of page 373) and
a list of business rules (like the numbered list just before step 1 on page 373) – most of this is
simply a statement of your “common sense” understanding of how a youth activity is organized
• A slide containing a list of entity classes and their primary keys (like those shown just before step
2 on page 374)
• A slide containing a list of relationships (like step 2 bullet lists on pages 376 and 378)
• A slide containing an entity-relationship diagram (like figure C.5 on page 378)
• One slide for each entity class table or relation (like figure C.7 on page 382)
• Again, actual names, ID numbers, addresses, etc. must not appear in your slides!!
This presentation is NOT intended for use at a meeting. You do not need overview, discussion,
recommendation, summary, and reference slides which are often found in a typical project presentation. However, you should approach this as a “professional” business product that you would submit to your supervisor or director (me) that you need to impress (for a better grade)! Take the time to make the product as complete as possible and look good.
There are other drawing tools that could be used to create an ER diagram but I’ve found PowerPoint
relatively easy to work with and everyone should have a copy installed on your McM laptop. You can
download the PowerPoint presentation from the Moodle assignment that contains some sample items for this assignment – copy and paste as needed!
