choose 1 question from these 3

As I mentioned in class, you can choose one or two (but not all three) of the following subjects to write about for your second exam paper. The second paper should be in the same format, style, and length as the first paper. Those of you who would like to choose two rather than one topic should make sure that you can analyze the two subjects in proper depth. Here are the three topics:

1.The Houston Astros "sign-stealing" scandal (drawing upon our readings and analysis of other scandals, especially the GM and VW scandals). What happened? Why did it happen? What are the takeaways you draw?

2.Analysis of a business's response to the Covid-19 pandemic that either did or did not (in whole or part) show "moral imagination."The discussion should draw upon the Johns Hopkins ethics paper as a guide as to the ethical issues of a company's response.

3.Analysis of a business whistleblower case showing the complexities of the subject -- including why the business became vulnerable to a whistleblower, what motivated the whistleblower, and what takeaways you draw.

As an FYI:The first half of the next class session will revolve around two videos of whistleblowers -- Tyler Schultz, who blew the whistle on fraud at Theranos (the subject of a best seller, Bad Blood); and Bradley Birkenfeld, who received $104 million for blowing the whistle on the Swiss bank UBS for assistance the bank provided to American citizens who were defrauding the US Treasury if tax money.

and here is the instruction

Students are required to complete a take-home, written examination covering Part II: Issues in Business Ethics. The exam will be in essay format (five pages) asking students to apply ethical reasoning and insights to one or more critical questions in business ethics

The paper must be five pages (or slightly less), including any footnotes, with one-inch margins, double-spaced, and Times New Roman 12-point font.Do not include a title page, but do include a title and your full name. Also, please number the pages. On the examples and other references, please follow the Chicago Manual of Style’s footnote format, a summary of which is available at

THE HOUSTON ASTROS "SIGN-STEALING" SCANDAL Name Course Date What Happened The Houston Astros sign stealing scandal is a historical contravention of ethics in which Houston Astros were engaged in a chain of rule-compromising activities in the Major League Baseball. The members of the team leveraged the capabilities of technology to pilfer the signages of their opponents over the two-year seasons ending in 2018. Subsequent findings reveal that the onset of the scandal was rooted in a PowerPoint presentation by Derek Vigoa, an intern in the team, to Jeff Luhnow who was serving as the general manager. The presentation was laced with an algorithmic element rooted in an excel-based app. The technological tool was strategically designed to facilitate decoding all signs used by the team’s opponents’ catchers flashed to their pitchers. Primarily, Astros utilized the algorithmic tool, referred to as codebreaker, to gain unfair advantage over their competitors during the league matches. Factual findings into the allegations on the sign-stealing scandal revealed that employees working for Astros stood at the core of the saga. Individuals working in the team’s video replay review compartment utilized the center field camera’s feeds from the live game proceedings for decoding and transmitting the sign sequences of their opponents. They leveraged the sign knowledge when the team’s runners were on the second base to gain unfair advantage over the catchers and runners of the opposing teams. The players and their coach, Alex Cora, leveraged the stolen sign information that would be deciphered to the batter from the second base during matches. During the early stages of the 2017 season, Astros’ players held discussions on the way to beef up their ability to decode the signs of their opponents and transmit them to their batter. Alex Cora’s commitment to further the unethical practice was evidenced by his search of a technician to work in their video room for the installation of a monitor whose specific function would be to display the center field camera feed in real-time outside the dugout of Astros. A single or multiple players were tasked with the role of watching the center field camera to decode the signs and communicate the type of pitch expected to follow to their batter. They used different approaches to communicate the decoded information, including clapping and whistling among others. The scheme was mainly driven by the...
