Not all managers are leaders. A leader is one who “[influences] behaviors of individuals and groups toward predetermined goals in organizations” (Baack, 2012, p.357). A manager focuses on “coping with complexity through the use of basic managerial functions of planning, organizing, and control” (Baack, 2012, p. 212). Therefore, one does not have to be a manager to be a leader. Not all leadership styles are ethical. While Home Depot’s Robert Nardelli might have been considered an effective manager – nearly doubling sales between 2000 and 2005 – his leadership style was offensive to employees and investors alike. A brief discussion of different leadership theories will help to identify the flaws in his tactics.
