In 1788, Emmanuel Kant released his “Critique of Practical reason,” which published his Categorical Imperative. The Categorical Imperative can be stated several ways; “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law,” and/or “Act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end” and finally, “Act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end” ("New World Encyclopedia", 2012).  The categorical imperative addressed people’s duty to treat people with dignity, and to have a moral compass (moral relativism). The idea is that we do something just because it is right, and not because it is morally praiseworthy. Treat people as a means not as an ends (Moore & Parker, 2009).
