The course discussed many useful concepts in the field of mathematics. This course was the second in a first-part series designed for K-8 pre-service teachers, which addressed the conceptual framework for mathematics taught in elementary school. The focus of the class was on on real number properties, patterns, operations and algebraic reasoning. Also, the course has addressed the relationship of the course concepts to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for K-8 instruction.
In addition, the course has introduced and explained the six principles of elementary school mathematics as defined by the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics. It has also discussed and explain the five mathematical process standards as defined by the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics. In term of problem-solving, the class has introduced and identified the problem-solving strategies. Through the class, we learned how to apply problem-solving strategies, and use numerical patterns, relations, and functions to solve problems.
In addition, we in the class learned how to represent mathematical situations and structures analytically using algebraic thinking. We also used mathematical models to represent quantitative relationships. Finally, the course introduced how to apply number theory to applications, how to apply the properties of integers, how to computer outcomes, and make reasonable estimates; including solving fractions, decimal, percent, and real number problems.
