worth 5 points. To receive any credit for this assignment, use the following guidelines:
• The assignment must be in a paper or vinyl folder, with your name and student ID number on the
cover.
• Use the following format:
Page 1: The complete SAS program for question 1, followed by the SAS output for question 1.
Page 2: Your complete hypothesis test for question 1 and your memo or summary of your analysis.
Page 3: The complete SAS program for question 2, followed by the SAS output for question 2.
Page 4: Your complete hypothesis test for question 2 and your memo or summary of your analysis.
Page 5: The complete SAS program for question 3, followed by the SAS output for question 3.
Page 6: Your complete hypothesis test for question 3 and your memo or summary of your analysis.
Page 7: The complete SAS program for question 4, followed by the SAS output for question 4.
Page 8: Your complete hypothesis test for question 4 and your memo or summary of your analysis.
Please note that your homework assignment must contain the 8 pages noted above, and in exactly the order
and format specified. It is your responsibility to format your assignment to meet these requirements.
• You must also e‐mail me your SAS programs, output, and answers on or before the assignment due
date ([email protected]). Failure to e‐mail me your SAS programs on time will result in a failing
score on the assignment.
• Since this is a graded assignment, I cannot provide you with any assistance. You should be able to

1. The Federal Correction Agency is investigating whether an individual released from federal
prison makes a different adjustment to civilian life if he or she returns to their hometown or if
they go elsewhere to live. To put it another way, is there a relationship between adjustment to
civilian life and place of residence after release from prison?
The agency’s psychologists interviewed 200 randomly selected former prisoners. Using a
series of questions, the psychologists classified the adjustment of each individual according to
the following variables:
Variable 1: Adjustment to Civilian Life: Outstanding, Good, Fair, or Unsatisfactory.
Variable 2: Residence after Release from Prison: Hometown, Not Hometown.
The data from this study is summarized in the table below.
Adjustment to Civilian Life

Use SAS and an appropriate statistical test to determine whether there is a relationship
between adjustment to civilian life and place of residence after release from prison. Use a
significance level of α = .05. Follow the 5-step procedure for hypothesis testing discussed in
class.
Step 1: State the null and alternative hypotheses.
Step 2: State the decision rule for rejecting the null hypothesis (using the critical value
approach).
Step 3: Conduct the appropriate statistical test and identify the obtained value of the test
statistic, as well as the p-value.
Step 4: Compare the critical-value to alpha, and state whether you “Reject” or “Fail to
Reject” the null hypothesis.
Step 5: Provide a “plain English” interpretation of your findings.
If your analysis finds statistically significant differences, identify what those differences are,
using the cell chi-square values, observed frequencies, and expected frequencies. Briefly
summarize your results and any recommendations in a business memo to me.
2. After conducting the original analysis, one of the Federal Correction Agency psychologists
wondered whether or not gender also influences a prisoner’s adjustment to civilian life. The
data from the original study was reclassified to take each prisoner’s gender into account. The
data is summarized in the table below.

Controlling for a prisoner’s gender, is there is a significant relationship between adjustment to
civilian life and place of residence after release from prison? Use SAS, a significance level of α
= .01, and the 5-step procedure for hypothesis testing discussed in class.
If your analysis finds statistically significant differences, identify what those differences are,
using the cell chi-square values, observed frequencies, and expected frequencies. Briefly
summarize your results and any recommendations in a business memo to me.
3. The director of advertising for the Cleveland Plain Dealer is studying the relationship between
the type of community in which a subscriber resides and the section of the newspaper he or
she reads first. For a sample of readers, she collected the following sample information:
National
News Sports Comics
City 170 124 90
Suburb 120 112 100
Rural 130 90 88
At the .05 significance level, can she conclude that there is a relationship between the type of
community where the person resides and the section of the paper read first? Use SAS and the
5-step procedure for hypothesis-testing discussed in class.
If your analysis finds statistically significant differences, identify what those differences are, use
the cell chi-square values, observed frequencies, and expected frequencies. Briefly summarize
your results and any recommendations in a business memo to me.
4. Can cola drinkers tell the difference between Regular Pepsi and Diet Pepsi? To answer this
question, a sample of 46 Pepsi drinkers was asked to identify whether the beverage they were
sampling was “Regular Pepsi” or “Diet Pepsi”. The resulting data was coded as follows:
0 1 = Made an incorrect choice when given regular Pepsi
(Was given regular Pepsi and identified it as diet Pepsi)
1 1 = Made a correct choice when given regular Pepsi
(Was given regular Pepsi and identified it as regular Pepsi)
0 2 = Made an incorrect choice when given diet Pepsi
(Was given diet Pepsi and identified it as regular Pepsi)
1 2 = Made a correct choice when given diet Pepsi
(Was given diet Pepsi and identified it as diet Pepsi)
Variable Name Variable Coding
Correct 0 = No (Incorrect choice) 1 = Yes (Correct choice)
Colatype 1 = Regular Pepsi 2 = Diet Pepsi
The data from the 46 taste-testers is provided below. Using a significance level of .05 does a
person’s ability to make the correct identification depend upon the type of Pepsi sampled (i.e.,
Regular or Diet)? Use SAS and the 5-step procedure for hypothesis testing discussed in class.
If your analysis finds statistically significant differences, identify what those differences are,
using the cell chi-square values, observed frequencies, and expected frequencies. Briefly
summarize your results and any recommendations in a business memo to me.
