The history of howStarbucksopened begins when the first store was opened in 1971 in Seattle™s Pike Place Market. Initially, there were three men who started the coffee giant. The first is Gordon Bowker, a college dropout from Seattle who had discovered his love of coffee on a trip to Italy in 1962. The other two were Bowker's roommates, Jerry Baldwin and Zev Siegl (Starbucks timeline). In 1982, Howard Schultz joined the Starbucks team as the Director of Retail Operations and Marketing. It was during this time that Starbucks began to provide coffee to restaurants and espresso bars. It did not take long for the popular coffee giant to expand it sales nationally. By 1987 it had grown to 17 stores and by 1988it had expanded to 33 stores. At this point, the name was changed to Starbucks Corporation.
