Upon our arrival, another officer, a 30 year veteran, is already on scene. I notice this officer take and eat a candy bar worth $1 without paying for it. In this instance, I feel it is appropriate to challenge the officer. Honesty and integrity are major factors to being a successful police officer. Stealing from the scene of a burglary scene not only diminishes the integrity of the investigation but that of the officer. Confronting the officer would acknowledge that I observed his actions and would confirm if he left money on the counter or otherwise paid for the snack he consumed. Finding out he did not pay for the item would leave me no choice but to report the incident to a supervisor as this situation would be better handled by a supervisor than a frontline œrookie officer. In 1973, the Knapp Commission used the term meat eaters. Meat eaters participated in shakedowns, œshopped at burglary scenes, and engaged in more active deviant practices (Pollock, 2019, p. 184). The officer in this scenario would be a meat eater and would also be involved in economic corruption which includes thefts from burglary scenes.
