Simply put, a computer network is designed to connect users and allow them to access and share a variety of resources. All networks are comprised of four basic elements: Hardware, Software, Clients, and Connection. The foundation of any network is the hardware that runs it. To successfully create a network you™ll need Network Interface Cards (NIC), routers/switches, modems and repeaters. Without this basic hardware, the network is inaccessible and essentially becomes pointless to have. For the hardware to interact with the network, it needs software to tell it what to do. The primary form of software used in the creation of a network is Protocols. Protocols issue commands instructing the hardware and devices on how to connect to and communicate with the network. Clients are the devices (i.e. computers) that are connected to the network. Clients are essentially the reason for the network. Without clients, access to the network becomes unnecessary as does the network itself. The connection mediums are the final vital piece of the network as without a connection, the network can™t run. The medium used to actually create the connection varies dependent on the type of network.
