When you have evidence to support the alternative hypothesis, the null hypothesis can be rejected as false. In contrast, though there may be no evidence to support the alternative hypothesis, this does not mean that the null hypothesis is true but rather than we should not reject or œfail to reject the null hypothesis. Researchers are trying to find evidence for the alternative hypothesis, they do not try to prove that the null hypothesis is true, therefor failure to reject does not mean accepting.  References  Taylor, C.
