Lens Analysis A.) History The history of white privilege in modern history was brought to light in 1988 by Peggy McIntosh. Her introduction of white privilege as œunearned advantages used by white people as a tool for oppression and personal gains. In the most recent years, white privilege has been associated with white police officers using excessive force against people of color and facing no consequences for their actions. This in turn started the Black Lives Matter Movement that addresses police brutality, systematic racism, and racial inequality faced by the black community. History shows us that the racial divide is widening due to the mounting killings of black men by white officers. But what can we learn from history when it comes to racism? In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson created the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders in response to riots that stemmed from police abuse. The Kerner Commission acknowledged that white racism not black anger opened the door to the civil unrest. œThe nation, the Kerner Commission warned, was so divided that the United States was poised to fracture into two radically unequal societies”one black, one white.
