IDS 402 Wellness Milestone Two Analyzing Obesity Through the Lenses of History and Humanities    Milestone Two: Analyzing Obesity Through the Lenses of History and Humanities  IDS-402 Wellness  Analyzing Obesity Through the History Lens  Obesity is a common, costly, and serious disease that has been increasing in numbers throughout history, bringing us to today where there is still a growing issue with obesity in the United States, enough to be an epidemic.The history lens takes a look back in time, and looks at past events leading up to where we are now exploring different time periods and different factors. Obesity trends go all the way back to the 1970™s when researchers started to see an increase throughout the US (Mitchell et al., 2011). In years following, they saw an uptick trend of obese adults each year. While they saw an increase in all gender-ethnic groups, they were able to do some research on what other factors were included in those numbers. They looked at education, income, race, and gender. Since the 1970™s the rate of obesity has grown steadily but in 1999, the CDC reported a rapid increase in obesity reports in the US, reporting multiple factors contributing to it (CDC Media Relations, 1999).  Throughout history there were economic factors and social factors that contributed to this spike in obesity. The amount of calorie intake increased due to the frequent openings of new fast-food restaurants, prices of healthy foods were high compared to processed foods that were full of sugar, salt, and carbohydrates, and there was a growing poverty level (CDC M
