Officer Hoakiko has options when it comes to addressing the complaint against a homeless man that he finds sleeping at a bus stop with an open container of alcohol. He could take him in and charge him for public intoxication, possessing an open container of alcohol, or even panhandling. (SNHU, 2020) He also acknowledges that doing so would only serve as a bandaid in temporarily addressing the problem. Instead, he approaches the man with respect and takes the time to get to know him and see him as a human being that is struggling. He learns that this man is military veteran who has fallen on hard times since returning from war. (SNHU, 2020) Officer Hoakiko offers to help this man by connecting him with much-needed services to address his alcoholism as well as his mental health. He has also offered to have his belongings, that he cannot take with him to the treatment facility, placed safely in storage. In doing all of this he may be setting this man up to turn his life around and begin the process to being gainfully employed and having a roof over his head.
