The chapter 4 material has made me want to examine the topic more closely. Do dreams really represent our subconscious thoughts and beliefs? I remember my father used to describe my grandmother™s thoughts about dreams. She was Cherokee and believed our ancestors use dreams to communicate with us to advise us or just check in. According to our text, a trance is a sleeplike state marked by reduced sensitivity to stimuli, the loss of knowledge, and automatic motor activity (Shiraev, 2016). A visionary trance is when a person experiences a hallucination and a possession trace is when a person experiences his or her body being invaded by a spirit or spirits, like a demonic possession (Shiraev, 2016). Demographic groups most susceptible to visual illusions are men in hunter-gatherer societies while possession trances are more common in women not in hunter-gatherer societies (Shiraev, 2016). Throughout history, women have been referred to as being possessed when they go away from society norms. I feel this may be ingrained in humans in general. Around the world, some cultures women are not treated as equals. Also, I feel women are generally seen as more emotional than men because of this.
