It is used to help lengthen the life of IPv4 as well as deliberate the progression of routing tables. CIDR is based on variable-length subnet masking (VLSM), this allows it to figure out prefixes of arbitrary lengths making it much more productive than the old system. The old system method came with inadequacies that drained the availability of IPv4 addresses quicker than it needed to. CIDR is constructed on the idea of subnet masks, a mask is assigned over an ip address and creates a sub network: a network that is subordinate to the internet. The subnet mask tells the router which part of the IP address is assigned to the hosts and which establishes the network. VLSM stands for Variable Length Subnet Mask where the subnet design uses more than one mask in the same network which means more than one mask is used for different subnets of a single class A, B, C or a network. To dodge wasting of IP addresses, classless networking was presented by the way of VLSM. Its used to raise the usability of subnets as they can be an alterable size. Example: a /30 subnet mask, gives you 2 host addresses per subnet, can be used for point-to-point links between routers.
