Introduction When I was a little girl I lived in a little town called Havre in the country of Belgium. While the countrys residents are made up of primarily French and Dutch speaking natives, there were a lot of art influences spread throughout the culture from other countries as well. I was first introduced to the Russian nesting doll when I was a little girl at Christmastime during one of the festivals that took place in our town. As the holiday parades swept through our streets, decorated floats and festive performers sparkled and danced to music and threw candy and fruit to all the towns people watching it. One of these floats featured a giant mechanical nesting doll that would open up and pop out other smaller nesting dolls from the inside; it was my favorite float to watch and we followed it for several streets through the village. It wasnt until my travels to Germany, where I resided for two and a half years as an adult, that I saw another nesting doll similar to the one from my childhood. It wouldnt be until today that I truly learned more about their history and significance in Russian art and culture and that their true name is the ‘Matryoshka stacking nesting doll from Russia (Shabi, 2015).
