HN370_Unit_4_Assignment_.docx HN 370 Homelessness Department of Human Services: Purdue University Global HN 370: Child Welfare and Family Homelessness Homelessness can be defined as living on the streets, moving back and forth between shelters, jumping from one persons couch to the next, living in a vehicle, living in a communal boarding house without private structure. “As of January 2019, Alaska had an estimated 1,907 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)†(United States Interagency Council of Homelessness (USICH), 2019). 161 of those people experiencing homelessness were family households. Also during the 2017-2018 school year the U.S Department of education reported that an estimated 3,769 public school students had experienced homelessness throughout the year. Statistically speaking Alaska does not have the highest number of families experiencing homelessness, but we also do not have the lowest number. Compared to New York which has Over 15,901 family households experiencing homelessness we look like we are doing okay with only 161 reported. However due to the size and resources we have here in Alaska it honestly does not make sense the amount of homeless families we have. These numbers are based on 2019 statistics we can only imagine what the numbers are like now that we had a nationwide pandemic happen that made millions lose their jobs.
