The harm reduction approach is beneficial to these clients that have yet to make the substance use change within their lifestyle just yet. This paper is going to discuss harm reduction by defining harm reduction, explaining the importance of harm reduction in recovery, and discuss how to identify clients that would benefit from harm reduction. Define Harm Reduction Sometimes when entering treatment for substance abuse it is hard for the client to fully commit to abstaining from substance use. Harm reduction is an approach to substance abuse treatment that does not require that the client completely abstain from substance use. This approach is used to help educate clients on strategies to reduce the negative health and social effects of continuous substance use. Harm reduction is used to minimize destructive effects of continuing to use. This approach looks at helping the client by “meeting them where they are at†instead of judging or shaming the client.
