According to Robbins and Judge (2007), the contingency model proposed that group performance depends on a leaders style and the situations that give the leader control ( Robbins & Judge, 2007, p 398). The leaders personality determines the individual leadership style that is used, which is usually stable or permanent (Da Cruz, Nunes, & Pinheiro, 2011; Robbins & Judge, 2007). The contingency model uses the least preferred coworker questionnaire to measure whether a person is task-oriented or relationship-oriented ( Robbins & Judge, 2007). The least preferred coworker questionnaire is a goal hierarchy index, that determines leadership motivation based on the score one receives (Fiedler,1972). The score is used to determine leadership effectiveness based on the organizational situation and the leaders style (Robbins & Judge, 2007). A high least preferred coworker score is positive, which means that the persons style is geared towards human relationships (Da Cruz et al., 2011). Therefore, a low least preferred coworker score is negative since the persons style is task-oriented (Da Cruz et al., 2011).
